使い方 Usage
使い分け Common distinctions
- conversations より学術的な語で、個々の会話に加え、話題の語られ方や理解の枠組みを指すことがあります。 Discourses is more academic than conversations. It can refer to broader ways of discussing and understanding a subject, as well as individual discussions.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
discourse に複数の -s を加えて discourses。語末が /s/ なので複数語尾は /ɪz/ と発音し、音節が一つ増えます。同じ話題を語る複数の枠組みを並べて比べる場面で覚えましょう。
Add plural -s to discourse: discourses. Because discourse ends in /s/, the plural ending is pronounced /ɪz/, adding a syllable. Picture several frameworks for discussing the same subject being compared.

discourses の語源・成り立ち Etymology
discourses は discourse に複数語尾 -s が付いた形で、語源は中世フランス語 discours、さらにラテン語 discursus/discurrere にさかのぼります。dis-「離れて・あちこちへ」+ currere「走る」から「言葉や思考が走り回る」感覚が生まれ、そこから「談話」になりました。関連語は discursive, course。
Discourses is the plural of discourse. Discourse entered English through Middle French discours and derives from Latin discursus, related to discurrere, “to run in different directions.” That verb combines dis-, suggesting movement apart, with currere, “to run.” The sense developed from movement back and forth to the movement or progression of thought and speech, and then to connected discussion, argument, or broader systems of communication.
