driftwood は drift「漂流する」+ wood「木」で、drift は古ノルド語 drifa「押し流す」、wood は古英語 wudu に由来します。水にただ浮く木でなく「流れに駆られた木」が原像で、drive や drove と同根だと、流木が力に運ばれた残り物だと分かります。
