driverless は driver＋-less で、『運転する人がいない』が原義です。driver は古英語 drifan（押し進める）にさかのぼる drive 系で、-less も古英語由来なので、意味は文字どおり『運転者なし』です。
Driverless is built from driver and the suffix -less, so its original sense is literally "without a driver." Driver comes from drive, which goes back to Old English drifan, meaning "to push forward" or "urge on." Because -less is also an old English suffix, the whole word developed in a very direct way: "having no person to drive."
