drover は drive「追って進ませる」に -er が付いた語で、語源は古英語 drifan「押す・追い立てる」です。家畜を前へ前へと動かす人をそのまま名づけた形で、drive や drift に通じる「押されて進む」感覚が見えます。
Drover comes from drive plus the agent ending -er. Drive goes back to Old English drifan, meaning to push, force forward, or chase along. The word first meant a person who moved animals forward by driving them. The same old root is also seen in drift.
