Exothermic describes a chemical reaction or process that gives off heat. It is often used in science when talking about reactions like burning or mixing certain substances. The opposite word is exothermic's opposite, endothermic, which means heat is absorbed.

thermic を見たら thermal, thermometer の therm- を思い出して、まず「熱に関係する語」と固定する。さらに exo- は exoskeleton などと同じく「外側・外へ」の感覚なので、熱が外へ出る反応 = 発熱性とつなげると覚えやすい。反対は endothermic で、endo- は「内へ」、熱を吸って周囲を冷やす側。化学では exothermic reaction が定番表現で、燃焼や中和のように周囲が温まる場面と結びつけると定着しやすい。
