philatelic は仏 philatélie 由来で、ギリシャ語 phil-「愛する」+ ateles「料金負担のない」から作られた語。philosophy の phil- と同系。『切手で料金支払い済みの郵便を好む』という感覚から、切手収集の意味になった。
Philatelic comes from French philatelie, a word created from Greek roots: phil-, meaning "loving," and ateles, meaning "free from tax or payment." The idea was originally about liking stamped mail that showed the postage had already been paid. The phil- part is the same one seen in words like philosophy and philanthropy.
