A hoodlum is a violent or dishonest young criminal, or a rough person who behaves like one. The word is often used for street crime, gangs, or threatening behavior. It is an informal word and can sound a little old-fashioned.

hoodlum は、まず thug（乱暴者）や gangster（ギャング）と同じ「街のならず者」グループに置いて覚えると残りやすい語です。強い組織犯罪人というより、路上でたむろして脅す・荒らすチンピラ感が強め。a gang of hoodlums, local hoodlums のように複数で出やすいのもヒントです。hood と見えても服の hood から意味を取ろうとせず、hoodlum＝street troublemaker と一塊で覚えるのが近道です。

hoodlum は19世紀後半のアメリカ英語で広まった語で、カリフォルニアの不良集団名から出たとも、ドイツ方言 Huddellump「ぼろを着たごろつき」に由来するとも言われ、語源は未確定です。それでも一貫して「街で荒れる若いならず者」を指し、短縮形 hood も同系です。
Hoodlum became common in American English in the late 19th century. Its exact origin is uncertain: some connect it with the name of a rough gang in California, while others suggest a German dialect source meaning a ragged or disorderly person. Even with the uncertain history, the word consistently referred to a violent or troublesome street youth. Hood is a later shortened form.
