philately の語源・成り立ち Etymology
philately はフランス語 philatelie から入った、19世紀生まれの語です。ギリシャ語 phil-「愛する」+ ateleia「料金免除・無税」からできており、切手が「郵便料金は前払い済み」と示すことから「切手収集」になりました。関連語は philosophy, bibliophile。
Philately came into English from French philatelie in the 19th century. It was formed from Greek phil- meaning "loving" and ateleia meaning "exemption from tax or payment." The idea was that a stamp showed the postage had already been paid, and from that the word came to mean the collecting of stamps. It is related in form to words like philosophy and bibliophile.
