A bibliophile is a person who loves books very much, especially collecting, reading, and caring for them. The word is often used for people who enjoy books as objects as well as for their content.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず2つに切ると覚えやすいです。biblio- は bibliography や Bible にも見える「本」系、-phile は Anglophile のように「〜好きな人」。つまり bibliophile は直感的に「本好き」。ただし単なる reader ではなく、読むだけでなく集める・装丁や版にも関心を向けるタイプを連想すると定着します。book lover よりやや文化的・収集家的で、library や rare books と結び付けて覚えると使い分けしやすいです。

フランス語 bibliophile を経て、ギリシャ語 biblion「本」＋ philos「愛する」にさかのぼる語です。直訳すると「本を愛する人」で、愛書家の意味がそのまま見えます。同じ要素は bibliography や philosophy にも見られます。
