森林で、樹冠の下から地表付近までに広がる低木や草本の植生層を指します。上層の木々に遮られて光が弱いため、日陰に適応した植物が多く見られます。また、小動物や鳥のすみかとなり、生態系の多様性を支える重要な層でもあります。
