canopy は中世ラテン語 canopeum を経て入り、さらにギリシャ語 konopeion「蚊帳」にさかのぼります。元は寝床を覆う虫よけ布だったため、そこから上を覆う天蓋・おおいの意味へ広がりました。関連語は canopied, conopial。
Canopy came through Medieval Latin from Greek konopeion, which originally meant a bed net used against mosquitoes. Because this net covered a bed from above, the word gradually shifted to mean any overhead covering. Later it was used for decorative coverings and then for wider sheltering structures.
