earringは古英語ēare由来のear「耳」と、古英語hring由来のring「輪」を組み合わせた語。もともと「耳につける輪」がそのまま意味になり、形から納得しやすい。同系にaural（耳の）やringlet（小さな輪）がある。
Earring is a transparent compound of ear and ring. Ear descends from Old English ēare, while ring comes from Old English hring, a circular band or object. The compound therefore literally described a ring worn at the ear. Its modern meaning broadened with changing jewelry styles and now includes ear ornaments that are neither circular nor inserted through a piercing.
