An ecologist is a scientist who studies how living things relate to each other and to their environment. The word is common in biology and environmental science, especially when talking about ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation.

ecology を知っていれば ecologist は「その分野の人」と取れる。-ist は scientist, artist と同じく「〜する人」を作る語尾なので、ecology + -ist で覚えるのが基本。注意したいのは economist との見間違いで、つづりは近いが意味はまったく別。ecologist は生き物同士と環境の関係を科学的に調べる人で、environmentalist が保護を訴える人寄りなのに対し、こちらは研究者寄り。study ecosystems, field research, marine ecologist などの文脈と一緒に結ぶと残りやすい。
