生態系（せいたいけい）とは、特定の地域に住む生物とその環境全体が相互に作用し、バランスを保つシステムのことです。食物連鎖やエネルギーの流れを含みます。

ecosystem は 1935年ごろの学術語で、eco- + system から成ります。eco- は ecology 由来でギリシャ語 oikos「家・すみか」、system はギリシャ語 systēma「組み合わさった全体」にさかのぼります。ecology や economy も同系で、「生き物の住まい全体の仕組み」と考えると生態系の意味がつかめます。
