かろうじて得る
解説 Definition
不足するものを工夫や苦労によって、どうにか確保する。通常はeke outの形で使われる。
To obtain or produce something only with difficulty and in a barely sufficient amount. It is usually followed by "out" and often describes managing to secure a living, food, or a narrow victory.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
eke は現代英語ではほぼ eke out の形で現れ、「足りないものを少しずつ補い、かろうじて必要量を得る」とひとかたまりで覚えるのが実用的です。もとの「増やす・付け足す」という感覚から、乏しい収入や食料を継ぎ足す姿を思い浮かべます。eke out a living「どうにか生計を立てる」が最重要の組み合わせで、eke out a narrow victory なら大差で勝つのでなく「辛勝する」。earn や obtain より、苦労・不足・ぎりぎり感を伴う点を押さえると混同しにくいです。
Learn eke as part of the phrase eke out, with the image of adding tiny amounts until there is just enough. Eke out a living is the most important pattern and suggests hardship or shortage rather than ordinary earning.
例文
They eked out a living by selling vegetables.
彼らは野菜を売って、かろうじて生計を立てた。
Our team eked out a narrow victory.
私たちのチームは、かろうじて僅差の勝利を得た。
She eked out enough food for one more meal.
彼女はもう一食分の食料をかろうじて確保した。
eke の語源・成り立ち Etymology
eke は古英語 ēcan「増やす・付け加える」に由来し、ゲルマン系の古い語です。もとは「少し足す」が中心で、そこから eke out で「乏しいものを継ぎ足して何とか得る・しのぐ」という意味へ広がったと見ると納得できます。同根語に augment があります。
Eke comes from Old English ēcan, meaning "to increase" or "to add." Its earlier sense of adding a little developed into the idea of making a limited supply last or obtaining something with difficulty.
