覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
embarking は embark に -ing を付けた現在分詞・動名詞で、語末の k はそのままです。もとは em-「中へ」+ barque「小舟」で「船に乗り込む」の意。そこから新しい計画へ船出する比喩を作り、embark on a project、a career、a journey の形で「〜に乗り出す」と覚えましょう。
Connect embarking with getting into a boat and beginning a voyage. The base verb embark contains the historical idea of entering a barque, or small vessel; adding -ing marks the ongoing action or turns it into a gerund. This physical picture extends naturally to major new undertakings: embarking on a research project or embarking on a career means setting out as if on a journey. Notice the usual preposition on before the activity. The opposite movement, leaving a ship or aircraft, is disembarking.

embarking の語源・成り立ち Etymology
embarking は embark「乗船する・着手する」の現在分詞で、フランス語 embarquer に由来します。em-/en-「中へ」+ barque「小舟」で、本来は「船に乗り込む」ことから、比喩的に「新事業に乗り出す」という意味が生まれました。関連語は embark、disembark。
Embarking is formed by adding -ing to embark. Embark came into English through French embarquer, built from en- or em-, “in” or “into,” and barque, “boat.” It originally meant putting someone or something aboard a vessel or going aboard. The idea of beginning a voyage then produced the figurative sense of starting an important enterprise, course of study, project, or career. Disembark uses dis- to express the reverse movement.
