emerita はラテン語 emeritus の女性形で、ex-/e-「外へ」+ merere「功績を得る・勤めを果たす」から来ています。つまり「務めをきちんと果たして役目を終えた人」という含みがあり、退いた教授に敬意をこめて使われるのです。merit や demerit も同じ mer- を含みます。
