物事の悪い点や不利な点、または規則違反などに対して与えられる罰点を指す名詞。merit の反対語として使われ、計画や提案の欠点を述べる場合にも、学校や職場での減点処分を表す場合にも用いられる。
A demerit is a fault, weakness, or negative point in something. It can also mean a mark given as a punishment, especially in school or work systems. The word is used when comparing advantages and disadvantages.

demerit の語源・成り立ち Etymology
demerit は de- + merit に見えるが、実はラテン語 demereri「受けるに値する・身に招く」に由来する。merit や meritorious と同根で、もともと「自分が招いたもの」という感覚が、のちに悪い結果へ絞られて「欠点・減点要素」になった。
Demerit looks like de- plus merit, but it comes more directly from Latin demereri, meaning "to deserve" or "bring upon oneself." It shares its root with merit and meritorious. Over time, the idea narrowed from something one deserves in general to something bad that one has earned, which led to its modern negative sense.
