布地の上に別の布を切り抜いて縫い付ける装飾技法、またはその作品。
Applique is a piece of cloth sewn onto another piece of cloth as decoration, or the method of doing this. It is common in sewing, quilting, and fashion design. The word usually refers to added shapes or patterns, not printed decoration.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
apply（当てる・付ける）を知っていれば、applique は『布に何かを“載せて付ける”装飾』として覚えやすい。ポイントは、模様を糸で描く embroidery ではなく、切った布そのものを上から縫い付けること。quilt, dress, bag, cushion など布製品を飾る場面と結びつけると定着しやすい。patch は穴や破れの修理にも使えるが、applique は直すより“飾る”ニュアンスが強い。作品そのものを指すこともあるので、技法名と完成品の両方で覚えると迷いにくい。

applique はフランス語 appliqué「貼り付けたもの」からで、ラテン語 applicare にさかのぼり、ad-「〜へ」+ plicare「折る・重ねる」に分けられます。apply や application も同根で、「上に重ねて付ける」と考えると、布飾りの技法名だと自然にわかります。
Applique comes from French appliqué, meaning "applied" or "attached." It goes back to Latin applicare, from ad- "to" and plicare "to fold" or "lay together," and it is related to apply and application. The sense developed from putting one thing onto another to the decorative technique of attaching one piece of material to another.
