directorate は director「導く人」に名詞語尾 -ate が付いた語で、director はラテン語 dirigere（まっすぐ整え導く）に遡ります。語根 reg- は direct や regime にも見られ、「方向を与える人々の集まり」から総局の意味になったと分かります。
`Directorate` comes from `director` plus the ending `-ate`. `Director` goes back to Latin `dirigere`, meaning "to set straight" or "to guide," from a root also seen in `direct` and `regime`. The word originally pointed to people who give direction, and then came to mean the office, body, or system of directors as a whole.
