企業や団体で責任ある運営者として就く地位や役職、またはその在任期間を指す語。会社なら取締役、非営利団体なら理事などの職に当たり、組織の方針決定や監督に関わる立場を表す。文脈によっては、その役職の新設や任命について述べる場合にも使われる。
覚え方のコツ
director を知っていれば覚えやすい語で、まず核は「取締役・理事」である director。そこに -ship が付くと、membership と同じく「その身分・地位・在任」という名詞になります。つまり directorship は「director であること／そのポスト」。job より堅く、組織の運営責任を持つ役職を指すのがポイントです。take up a directorship, hold multiple directorships の形で見ておくと定着しやすく、direction（方向）とは混同しないよう注意。
