覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
business を知っていれば、「仕事の場にふさわしい感じ」→感情より要点・効率を優先する態度、とつなげると覚えやすい語です。にこやかで親しみやすいというより、会議・メール・交渉で淡々と手際よく進めるイメージ。professional に近いですが、businesslike はもう少し無駄がなく事務的。cold や blunt ほど強い悪印象ではありません。a businesslike manner / tone / approach でまとめて覚えると定着します。
Start from `business`, then add `-like`: it means “in a business way.” Picture someone speaking efficiently, focusing on facts and results, not warmth or emotion. Common phrases like `a businesslike manner` or `a businesslike tone` help fix it in memory. It is close to `professional`, but often feels more plain and practical.

businesslike の語源・成り立ち Etymology
businesslike は business + -like。business 自体は古英語系 busy に名詞語尾 -ness が付いた形で、busy や busyness と同根です。「仕事で忙しい人らしい」がそのまま、きびきびした事務的な態度という意味になりました。
Businesslike comes from business plus the ending -like, meaning "having the character of." Business is related to busy and originally referred to being occupied or active. From there, businesslike came to suggest the efficient, practical manner associated with work or trade.
