解説 Definition

人や作品などが感情を強く示したり、感情に訴えたりする性質を表す語です。心理学では感情的に反応しやすい傾向を指し、映画や音楽については人の心を動かす情緒的な質や感情表現の豊かさを表します。

Emotionality is the quality of having strong emotions or expressing feelings easily. It is often used when talking about personality, behavior, or artistic expression, and it can be seen as either positive or negative depending on the situation.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

emotion(感情)→ emotional(感情的な)→ emotionality(感情的である性質)と段階で覚えると定着しやすい語。-ity は「〜という性質」を作る名詞語尾で、individual → individuality と同じ型。emotion は一つ一つの感情、emotional は人や反応の状態、emotionality はその人・作品に備わる傾向や度合いを指す。psychology では high emotionality、批評では the emotionality of the music のように出やすい。sentimentality は「感傷過多」に寄りやすいので区別。

Build it step by step: `emotion` -> `emotional` -> `emotionality`. The ending `-ity` often means "the quality of," so `emotionality` means the quality or tendency of being emotional. It is often used for a person's style or a work of art, as in `high emotionality` or `the emotionality of the music`. Keep it separate from `sentimentality`, which often sounds more negative.

emotionality の語源・成り立ち Etymology

emotionality は emotion に -al と -ity が重なった語。emotion はフランス語経由でラテン語 emovere(e-「外へ」+ movere「動かす」)にさかのぼり、motionremove と同根で、「心が外へ動く性質」と捉えると感情の意味が見えやすい。

Emotionality is built from emotional plus the noun ending -ity. The base word emotion came through French from Latin emovere, from e- "out" and movere "to move." The original idea is of something being moved outward, which later became the idea of feelings being stirred. Related English words from the same root include motion and remove.
