ラテン語capsa（箱）の指小形capsula（小箱）にen-（中に入れる）と-ation（名詞化）が付いた語。「小さな箱に包み込むこと」が原義で、IT用語では情報隠蔽の意。同根語にcapsule（カプセル）、case（箱・事例）がある。
Encapsulation is built from encapsulate plus the noun-forming suffix -ion. Encapsulate contains en-, “in” or “within,” and capsule, from Latin capsula, “small box,” the diminutive of capsa, “box” or “case.” Its literal sense is therefore the act of enclosing something as if in a small container. The computing sense extends this physical image to data and operations enclosed behind a controlled interface.
