en-「中へ」+ trench「溝・塹壕」から成る語です。trench は古フランス語 trenchier「切る」にさかのぼり、原義は「地面を切って溝を作ること」でした。trench, retrench も同根で、「掘る」が「立場を固める」へ広がった流れが見えます。
Entrenching is built from en- and trench. Trench goes back through Old French trenchier, meaning "to cut," so the original sense was cutting into the ground to make a ditch or trench. From that physical idea, the word later developed the sense of becoming firmly established or hard to remove.
