解説 Definition
典型とは、ある種類や分類の最も良い例、または代表的な代表者を意味します。その種類の本質的な特徴をすべて持つ、最高の見本を表します。
The epitome of something is the perfect or best example of it. It is used when a person, thing, or idea clearly represents a particular quality. This is a formal word and is often followed by "of."

epitome はフランス語・ラテン語を経て、古代ギリシャ語 epitomē「要約」に由来し、epi-「上に」+ temnein「切る」から成ります。「本質だけを切り出したもの」だから「要約」や「典型」になり、tome や epitomize も同じ「切る」の語根です。
Epitome came into English through French and Latin from Greek epitome, meaning a summary. It is built from epi- meaning "on" or "upon" and temnein meaning "to cut." The original sense was something cut down to its essential parts, which led to the idea of a brief summary and later a perfect example. Tome and epitomize share the same root.
