pretext はラテン語 prae-「前に」+ texere「織る」が元で、もとは「前面に織り込むもの」という感覚です。text や textile、context も同根で、本当の理由の前にそれらしく“織り上げた説明”が口実になったと考えると腑に落ちます。
Pretext comes from Latin praetextus, based on prae- meaning "before" and texere meaning "to weave." The original image was of something woven in front as a covering.
