equating の語源・成り立ち Etymology
equating はラテン語 aequus「平らな・等しい」から出た aequare「等しくする」が語源で、語根 aequ- は「差がなくそろう」感覚を表します。だから「別のものを同じ値や立場とみなす」と理解でき、equal や equation も同じ語根です。
Equating is the -ing form of equate. Equate comes through Latin aequatus, from aequare, “to make equal,” which is based on aequus, “level” or “equal.” The same Latin base appears in equal and equation. In English, the verb developed the sense of regarding different things as having the same value, meaning, or status.
