解説 Definition

Esperanto は国際的な補助語として作られた人工言語、エスペラント語を指します。多くの場合 Esperanto と大文字で書かれ、特定の国の母語ではなく、異なる言語の話者同士の交流を目的としています。

Esperanto is a deliberately constructed language created to support communication among people with different native languages. It is not tied to one nation and is known for a relatively regular grammar and productive word-building system.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

言語名なので通常は Esperanto と大文字で書きます。ザメンホフが「希望する者」を意味する筆名 Doktoro Esperanto を使い、その名が言語名になりました。「国際交流への希望」と、regular grammar、speak Esperanto、learn Esperanto という典型表現を一緒に覚えましょう。

Capitalize Esperanto because it is the name of a language. The most useful memory link is hope: its name came from Doktoro Esperanto, the pen name used by its creator, L. L. Zamenhof, and Esperanto means “one who hopes” in the language itself. Imagine people from different countries hoping to communicate through a shared, comparatively regular language. Learn it in natural combinations such as “learn Esperanto,” “speak Esperanto,” and “Esperanto grammar.” This historical link between the language’s name, its creator’s pen name, and the idea of international hope makes the word easier to retain.

esperanto の語源・成り立ち Etymology

考案者ザメンホフのペンネーム Doktoro Esperanto(希望する者)に由来する。スペイン語・ラテン語 sperare(希望する)が語根で、接頭辞 e-(外へ)+sperare で「望みを抱く者」の意。関連語: despair(絶望、希望を失う)、prosper(繁栄する)。国際平和への「希望」を込めて名付けられた人工言語である。

Esperanto takes its name from Doktoro Esperanto, meaning “Doctor Hopeful” or “Doctor One-Who-Hopes,” the pen name under which L. L. Zamenhof published the language in 1887. Within Esperanto, esper- is the root meaning “hope,” -ant- marks a person performing an action, and -o marks a noun. The pen name gradually became the conventional name of the constructed international auxiliary language itself.
