evaporator はラテン語 evaporare にさかのぼり、e-「外へ」+ vapor「蒸気」+ -ator「器具・行うもの」で成る。水分を外へ蒸気として逃がす構造から「蒸発器」の意味になった。vapor や vaporize も同じ root を持ち、気体化の感覚を共有する。
Evaporator comes from Latin evaporare, built from e- "out" and vapor "steam" or "vapor," with the ending -ator for an agent or device. The original idea was of something passing out as vapor.
