ラテン語 examen はもと『秤の針・計量』を指し、さらに ex-「外へ」+ agere「動かす」にさかのぼります。心を一つずつ量って確かめる比喩から『省察・良心の糾明』となり、examine や exact と同根だと厳密に吟味する感じがつかめます。
