exasperating はラテン語 exasperare「荒くする、怒らせる」に由来し、exasperate に -ing が付いた形。ex-「徹底的に」+ asper「ざらざらした」が核で、asperity も同根。心をざらつかせる感覚から「腹立たしい」になった。
