exempt はラテン語 eximere「取り出す・除く」に由来し、ex-「外へ」+ emere「取る」が核で、過去分詞 exemptus から来ました。preempt や redemption と同じ emere に触れると、義務の外へ取り出す発想から「免除される」と理解できます。
