fescueは古フランス語経由でラテン語festuca「草の茎・わら」にさかのぼる語で、細く硬い草をそのまま名づけたもの。接頭辞より語幹そのものが意味を担い、学名Festucaや形容語festucineにも「細い草茎」の感覚が残る。
Fescue comes through Old French from Latin festuca, meaning "stalk," "straw," or a small blade of grass. It was used for a thin, stiff grass, so the name stayed close to the plant’s physical shape. The same root appears in the grass name Festuca and in festucine.
