turf は古英語 turf / tyrf（芝土・芝の切り塊）にさかのぼる語です。もとは地面から切り出した芝そのものを指したため、今の「芝生」や転じて「縄張り」の感覚にもつながります。関連語は turfy, AstroTurf。
Turf goes back to Old English turf or tyrf, meaning a piece of grass-covered earth. It first referred to cut sod taken from the ground, and later came to mean grassland or a grassy surface. From that physical sense, it also developed the figurative meaning of an area someone claims as their own.
