特に子宮に発生する良性の腫瘍。線維性組織から形成される非悪性の成長で、医学的に一般的な疾患である。
A fibroid is a non-cancerous growth made of muscle and fibrous tissue, usually in the uterus. It is a medical term often used in women's health. Fibroids can sometimes cause pain or heavy bleeding, but some people have no symptoms.

fibroidは、ラテン語fibra「繊維」に、ギリシャ語由来の-oid「〜のような」が付いた語です。つまり「繊維のようなもの」が原義で、硬く筋っぽい腫瘍を表すのが腑に落ちます。fiberやfibrosisも同じfibra系です。
Fibroid comes from Latin fibra, meaning "fiber," plus the suffix -oid, meaning "like" or "resembling." So its basic sense is "fiber-like." English kept that idea for something made of or resembling fibrous tissue; related words include fiber and fibrosis.
