figは古フランス語figueを経て、ラテン語ficus「イチジク」にさかのぼります。地中海世界で古くから親しまれた果物名が、そのまま英語に入った語です。学名Ficusやfiggyは同じ語源で、形があまり変わっていないので覚えやすい語です。
