fitful は fit「発作・ひとしきりの状態」に接尾辞 -ful「〜に満ちた」が付いた語で、fit は古英語 fitt にさかのぼります。関連語に fitfully と fitfulness があり、何かが発作的に区切って起こる感じから「時々起こる」になりました。
