fluoridation は fluoride「フッ化物」に -ation が付いた語で、もとをたどるとラテン語 fluere「流れる」に行き着く。fluid や fluent と同根で、鉱石を溶かす流れをよくする物質の名から、「フッ素を加える処理」という意味が生まれた。
Fluoridation comes from fluoride plus the suffix -ation. Fluoride is connected in the end to Latin fluere, meaning "to flow," the same root seen in fluid and fluent, because certain minerals were named for helping substances melt and flow. From there, fluoridation came to mean the process of adding fluoride.
