Decentralisation is the process of moving power, control, or decision-making away from one central authority to smaller local groups or units. It is often discussed in government, business, and technology, where it can mean giving more independence to different parts of a system.

まず central「中心の」が見えると覚えやすい語です。centralise が「中央集権化する」なので、de- が付くと「中心から離す」感覚になり、decentralisation はその名詞形。「中央にまとめないで、複数に任せる仕組み化」と捉えると残りやすいです。政治なら decentralisation of power、ITなら decentralized network / finance が定番。distribution は単なる配分ですが、こちらは『中心そのものを弱める』ニュアンスまで含む点が違いです。centralisation との対比、decentralized との形のつながりも一緒に覚えると定着します。

de-「離れて」+ central「中心の」+ -isation「化」から成り、central はラテン語 centrum、さらにギリシャ語 kentron「鋭い先・中心」に由来します。epicenter や centralize と同根で、一つの中心から機能を外へ分ける感覚が「分散化」です。
