Consolidation means the process of combining things to make them stronger, simpler, or more effective. It is often used in business, finance, and organizations when separate parts are joined together. It can also describe a period of becoming more stable after change.

consolidation は、まず solid「固い・しっかりした」を芯に置くと覚えやすいです。con- には「一緒に」の感覚があるので、“ばらばらのものを一つに固める”→「統合」とつながります。動詞 consolidate「統合する」の名詞形でもあります。business/industry consolidation, debt consolidation などの形でよく出て、単なる足し算ではなく、複数を整理して一体化し、より強いまとまりにする感じが出ます。merge が合併という出来事寄りなのに対し、こちらは統合の過程や統合後のまとまりに意識が向きやすい語です。
