覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
focus に -ing を付ける際、イギリス英語では最後の s を重ねて focussing とすることがあり、発音は focusing と同じ /ˈfəʊkəsɪŋ/ です。レンズの焦点を一点に集める作業を思い浮かべ、the focussing of the lens や careful focussing で覚えます。米語では focusing が一般的です。
Connect focussing with the base verb focus. In this chiefly British spelling, the final s is doubled before -ing; American English normally writes focusing with one s. The pronunciation is the same, /ˈfəʊkəsɪŋ/ in standard British English. Picture turning a camera lens until a blurred subject becomes sharp. Expressions such as careful focussing and the focussing of the lens make the noun use concrete. Here the word means the physical process of adjusting optical focus, rather than simply concentrating attention on a task.

focussing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 focus(「炉、暖炉」)に由来。17世紀にケプラーが光学用語として「焦点」の意味で転用した。炉は家庭の中心であり、光や熱が一点に集まる場所。関連語: focal(焦点の)、fuel(燃料、同根)。一点に集中させるという物理的イメージが「注目する」の意味に広がった。
Focussing is a British spelling of the -ing form of focus. Focus comes from Latin focus, meaning “hearth” or “fireplace.” In the seventeenth century, the term was adopted in optics for the point at which rays converge, traditionally associated with Johannes Kepler’s scientific usage. From this physical sense developed the verb “bring into focus.” The doubled s in focussing reflects a British spelling convention; focusing is now also common.
