解説 Definition
物が本物で偽りがないこと、また人の態度や感情がうそではなく心からのものであることを表す名詞。作品や文書については「真正性」、謝罪や思いやりについては「誠実さ」「真摯さ」のように文脈に応じて訳し分ける。
Genuineness is the quality of being real, sincere, and not false. It can describe a person’s honest feelings or the true nature of an object or claim. The word is often used when judging trust, honesty, or authenticity.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず genuine を確実に押さえると覚えやすい。genuine は「本物の・心からの」で、fake / artificial の反対。そこに名詞化の -ness が付いて「本物であること」「誠実であること」になる。物なら the genuineness of the document のように『真正性』、人や態度なら her apology lacked genuineness のように『誠実さ・真摯さ』。authenticity は物寄り、sincerity は人寄りだが、genuineness はその両方にまたがる語として整理すると定着しやすい。

genuineness はラテン語 genuinus「生まれつきの・本物の」に -ness が付いた語で、核には genus「生まれ・種類」があります。genre や generate も同根で、「作り物でなく出生に忠実」という感覚から「真正さ」になると意味がつながります。
