解説 Definition
glutathione は、体内の多くの細胞に存在し、抗酸化作用などに関わる物質「グルタチオン」を指す名詞です。生化学や医学の文脈で使われます。
A small sulfur-containing compound made from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine and present in many living cells. It acts in antioxidant defense and other cellular processes, often by helping protect cells from oxidative damage.

Glutathione is a twentieth-century biochemical term. The element gluta- refers to glutamic acid, whose name is historically connected with Latin gluten, “glue,” because glutamic acid was first isolated from wheat gluten. The latter part incorporates a sulfur-related chemical element, reflecting the compound’s sulfur-containing cysteine group. The modern term names a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine and should not be confused with the food protein gluten.
