Etymology
Golem comes from Hebrew gōlem, a word referring to an unformed or unfinished substance or body. A related form occurs in Psalm 139 in reference to an unformed body. In later Jewish folklore, the word became the name for an artificial humanlike being shaped from clay and animated by sacred means. Stories associated with Prague, especially later versions involving Rabbi Judah Loew, helped make the figure widely known in European literature and modern popular culture.
