gown

A long, loose or formal item of clothing worn for a particular purpose, such as a ceremony, medical examination, or sleep. The word can refer to academic dress, a hospital garment, or an elegant long dress.
Memory Tip
Do not limit gown to the Japanese loanword’s image of a loose indoor robe. In English, the purpose is often identified by a word placed before it: a graduation gown is ceremonial academic clothing, a hospital gown is worn by a patient, and a nightgown is worn in bed. Picture one long garment appearing in three different settings—a graduation hall, a hospital room, and a bedroom. Robe overlaps with gown, but gown is especially common for long clothing associated with a defined ceremony, institution, medical situation, or formal occasion.

Etymology
関連語: nightgown(寝巻き)。
Gown entered English through Old French goune and is ultimately associated with Late Latin gunna, a word for a fur or leather garment. In medieval Europe, gowns were worn by scholars, clergy, and other people whose clothing could indicate rank or office. That institutional history survives clearly in academic gown. The word later broadened to include several kinds of long clothing, including formal dresses, hospital garments, and nightwear.
