gradation は grade に名詞化の -ation が付いた語。grade はフランス語を経てラテン語 gradus「一歩、段階」に由来し、もともと「段を追って進むこと」。だから gradation は、色や程度が少しずつ段階的に移る感じを表す。関連語は gradual、graduate。
