古英語 grǣpan（掴む）やゲルマン祖語 *graipan に由来し、-ing は現在分詞。grip（握る）や grope（手探りする）と同根で、いずれも「手で強くつかむ」動作を表す。物理的な把握から、比喩的に「理解する」意味にも広がった。
