事実を裏づける根拠や証拠がなく、正当な理由も認められない状態を表す語。うわさ、疑い、非難、告発などについて使われ、単に不快なだけでなく、内容に根拠がないことを強く示す。

ground + -less で「土台がない」と分解すると覚えやすいです。ground は地面だけでなく、議論や判断の「根拠・よりどころ」にもなるので、「話を支える地面がない」→「根拠のない」とつながります。特に rumor, accusation, claim など“言い分”につきやすく、false のように単に事実と違うというより、「そもそも証拠がない」感じが強い語です。反対の well-grounded（十分根拠のある）とセットで置くと定着します。
