Guanine is one of the chemical bases that make up DNA and RNA. It is mainly used in biology and chemistry, especially when talking about genes, cells, and genetic information.

guanine は単独で覚えるより、DNA/RNA の並びの中に置くと定着しやすい語です。まず A・G は adenine, guanine でどちらもプリン塩基、C・T・U は別側の仲間、と二分して整理します。そのうえで guanine は必ず cytosine と組む「G-C ペア」で固定すると混乱しません。実際の生化学では G と略され、guanosine, GTP など関連語にも広がるので、『G が付く核酸語の中心が guanine』という軸で覚えると再会時にも思い出しやすいです。

guanine の語源・成り立ち Etymology
guanine は海鳥のふんの guano から単離されたため、guano + 化学語尾 -ine で名づけられた。guano はケチュア語 wanu「ふん」に由来し、guanidine も同系なので、DNA の重要塩基名が意外にも採取源の名残だと思うと印象に残る。
Guanine was named after guano, because the substance was first obtained from seabird droppings. Guano came into Spanish from Quechua wanu, meaning "dung," and English later added the chemical ending -ine. So the modern scientific name still preserves the name of its original source. A related chemical word is guanidine.
